National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has directed the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to immediately begin the process of vetting the newly nominated IEBC commissioners.

In a statement dated Friday, May 9, Wetang'ula noted that the directive was in order, given the urgency for the constitution of the electoral body.

As highlighted in the statement, the committee ought to have a report ready once the NA resumes sittings after its recess on May 27.

"Noting the urgency to have the IEBC reconstituted, the Committee is expected to immediately commence the approval process and, thereafter, table its report immediately upon resumption of the House on Tuesday, 27th May 2025, to also enable the House to consider the nominees within the statutory timelines."

"The Clerk is hereby required to transmit this Notification to all Members of the National Assembly, and facilitate the Committee to undertake the necessary approval hearings on the nominees referred to them for consideration," read the statement in part.

The other nominated 6 commissioners are Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdalla.

Should Parliament approve the names, the 7 will then be sworn in and immediately commence their work at the electoral body.

Among the major activities expected to be overseen by the new commissioners are several by-elections across the country and the registration of new voters.

The new commission is also expected to commence preparations for the 2027 polls.
