"Any occurrence that raises concern about the safety of our leaders deserves attention and immediate action."

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has spoken out following reports of an alleged assassination attempt on her Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga.

In a statement on Monday, May 12, Wanga expressed concern over the safety of her deputy, and called for investigations into the matter.

"Any occurrence that raises concern about the safety and security of our leaders deserves attention and immediate action. This incident has come at a time when our county is still mourning the recent loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul,” she noted.

While details surrounding the incident remain scant, Wanga called upon security agencies to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable.

She also called for calm among Homa Bay residents and urged them to resist any form of violence amid the tense atmosphere.

“I urge our security agencies to move swiftly and impartially to investigate this matter and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

"I also appeal to the people of Homa Bay to remain calm and united during this difficult time. Let us reject violence in all its forms and stand together for peace, justice, and the rule of law,” she added.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Magwanga claimed that his life is in danger following an attack on one of his vehicles by gunmen.

He revealed that he had received credible information that some individuals were trailing him while heading home on Sunday night.

This forced the former Kasipul MP to change his usual route. However, another vehicle with his security detail was attacked when coming to protect him at his home.

"When I was coming home, I received information that I was being trailed. So I decided to change my route. I told my people to open the gate so that I could get into the compound quickly.

"My security team, that was coming for me, met them (the gunmen) where they were hiding along the way. My team fired at them twice. They also exchanged fire with the team, thinking that I was in the car," he said.

Following the attack, Magwanga noted that he was taking precautionary measures with the police investigating the matter.

"I had not taken this thing so seriously, thinking that they were empty threats. This is now real, and I have to take the necessary steps," the deputy governor added.
