"I speak on behalf of the president, principals, let's not play monkey games."

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has issued a warning to school principals, cautioning them against withholding students' certificates.

Speaking on Thursday, May 15, Kindiki said the government will not tolerate any principal who defies government directives.

The DP stated that those who fail to comply are putting their jobs at risk.

“If you are a principal who continues to defy the orders of the Government of Kenya, I want to say that you are putting your job at risk. All principals and headteachers must release certificates of all the students of Kenya.

"We are not requesting you. I speak on behalf of the president and government, principals, let's not play monkey games,” he warned.

This comes exactly a month after Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura also warned schools about defying directives on the issuance of KCPE and KCSE certificates.

Speaking on Monday, April 14, he noted that some schools were still withholding certificates despite the numerous directives issued by the government.

"A national examination certificate is the property of the learner. Denying any student access to their academic credentials undermines the very foundation of our education system and compromises the rights of the child.

"The government will not tolerate this continued impunity, and stern actions will be taken against schools that continue to defy this directive," he stated.

Mwaura further instructed Ministry of Education officials at the county level to file a report on the schools disobeying the order.

"All County Directors of Education have been directed to compile and submit a report within 14 days on the status of uncollected certificates. Any principal found culpable will face disciplinary and legal consequences.

"The Ministry has been instructed to take immediate and firm action against any individual who continues to defy this directive," he added.

In most cases, schools withhold certificates of students over outstanding fee arrears.
