The Ministry of Education has unveiled plans to establish a new education management system to replace the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).
In a statement on Thursday, May 15, the State Department for Basic Education said the new system, dubbed the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS), will consolidate all student data from early childhood education to university level into a single, integrated platform.
Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok announced that piloting of the system will begin in July, with a full rollout expected in September.
He added that parents and stakeholders will also be able to access KEMIS through a mobile phone-based application.

Bitok also noted that the new system will make it impossible to manipulate capitation amounts by registering ghost schools and inflating school populations.
KEMIS will also address existing challenges of having separate registration databases for various education levels, including Early Childhood and Development Education (ECDE), basic education, TVETs, and universities.
Additionally, it will serve as a repository for data on students, teachers, and institutions.
"By consolidating all learner data, from ECDE to higher education, into one platform, the system will enhance accuracy, transparency, and accessibility.
"It will ensure the government has the right statistics on every school to inform the distribution of teachers capitation, books and other resources," Bitok said.
On the other hand, Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang revealed that KEMIS will be integrated with the Civil Registration Services and the National Registration Bureau to assign every learner a unique personal number.
"Under the new Maisha ecosystem, we will provide a Unique Personal Identifier (UPI) to every newborn, which will also be used by KEMIS.
"In the event of death, the UPI will be the death certificated number. This will help us with accurate data on inevitable transitions," he said.
