The President of the Tanganyika Law Society added that Mwangi was being deported back to Kenya.

Boniface Mwabukusi, the President of the Tanganyika Law Society, has revealed that Boniface Mwangi was arrested for allegedly providing false information on the purpose of his visit to Tanzania.

In a statement dated Tuesday, May 20, Mwabukusi added that the Kenyan activist was being processed for deportation after being detained by Tanzanian authorities.

However, no details were provided on what details Mwangi provided while entering Tanzania.

"I have received reports from Adv. Emmanuel Ukashu assigned to handle this matter informing me that Mr. Boniface Mwangi, a Kenyan journalist and human rights activist, and Ms. Agatha Atuhaire, a Ugandan journalist and advocate, who were detained at the Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, since 19th May 2025, have been deported to their respective countries.

"It is alleged that Mr. Mwangi was arrested on the grounds of providing false information for purposes of entry into the territory, having arrived in Tanzania on 18th May 2025. Both individuals have been repatriated under the escort and supervision of officers from the Tanzania Immigration Services Department," he noted in the statement.

Since travelling to Tanzania, Mwangi has been hunted by Tanzanian authorities.

Notably, Mwangi had travelled to Tanzania at a time when there were court proceedings of Tundu Lissu, a senior opposition leader.

Kenyans, including Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, Martha Karua, activists Hussein Khalid, and Hanifa Adan, were deported after they arrived in Tanzania to attend the court proceedings.

On her part, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu cautioned foreign activists who were interfering with local affairs, further supporting the deportations.

"We should not allow them; they have already destabilized their country. The only country that has not been destabilized, where people are peaceful, is here (Tanzania)," she remarked.

"There have been several attempts, but I want to urge the authorities not to allow people from other countries to come and destabilize this country."
