During the project launch in 2023, Ruto detailed that the line would serve 10,000 people every day and reduce traffic along Ngong Road.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration for the construction of the Ksh8 billion Riruta-Ngong Railway line.

In a statement on Monday, May 26, Sifuna opined that the government should have prioritised the Karen-Ngong and Bomas-Kiserian road projects instead.

He stated that the road projects would have a better impact on the people in Nairobi and the surrounding counties.

"We have priority projects like the dualling of Karen-Ngong and Bomas-Kiserian that would be more impactful in terms of movement in the larger metropolitan area, but in a regime steeped in tender-driven decision making, this is what they have chosen to spend Ksh8.2 billion on," read the statement in part.

Equally, he noted that Kenya Railways had not engaged residents fully before undertaking the Railway Line.

"Had a meeting with the Karen & Langata District Association at my office this morning. They raised concerns about the ongoing construction of the Riruta-Ngong Railway line that is being undertaken by Kenya Railways despite any meaningful stakeholder engagement.

"Public participation is a constitutional imperative, and Kenya Railways has to answer to the public. It's not a favour," he added.

Construction of the Riruta-Ngong Railway project was launched in December 2023.

During the launch of the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR), Ruto detailed that the project would serve 10,000 people every day and reduce traffic along Ngong Road.

The new line is expected to run from Ngong - Bulbul - Karen - Nairobi terminus.
