The suspension of labour inspections is intended to give the government time to reform the system.

The Ministry of Labour has temporarily suspended all labour inspections nationwide.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced the suspension on Wednesday, May 28, while speaking at the 66th Annual General Meeting of the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE).

He pointed out that the suspension aims to give the government time to reform the system and make it fairer, more transparent, and predictable.

“In the past, some inspections have been carried out unfairly and have been used to harass employers. That must stop. We want to give businesses a grace period to put their houses in order without fear of unnecessary interference,” said Mutua.

The Labour CS also observed that many employers face multiple inspections from both national and county governments, which makes it difficult to do business.

“That’s why I plan to hold a retreat with employers to listen to your concerns and work together on lasting solutions,” he stated.

At the same time, CS Mutua pointed out that some employers have not implemented the 6% minimum wage increase announced by President William Ruto.

He said the failure to comply with the President’s directive was disappointing and that workers must be treated fairly, with their welfare coming first.

“I must point out that some employers have not implemented the 6 per cent minimum wage increase announced by the President. This is disappointing. Workers must be treated fairly, and their welfare must come first,” the Labour CS remarked.

Further, Mutua encouraged employers to reinvest in the economy by creating more jobs.

On May 1, during the Labour Day celebrations, President Ruto directed CS Mutua to ensure that employers implement the 6% minimum wage.

“I am directing the Ministry of Labour to work with the Head of Public Service to ensure that every employer makes sure that we implement the 6% increase of salary that we agreed upon last year and to quickly embark on the exercise to put together the next agreement so that we can take it forward in the next time,” Ruto announced.
