Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) confirmed that one of its key cancer treatment machines, the Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Elekta, suffered an unexpected technical failure and is currently out of service.
In a statement on Wednesday, May 28, KNH assured the public that it is taking necessary steps to mitigate any disruption to patient care.
“Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) wishes to inform the public that our Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Elekta machine, a vital piece of equipment in the treatment of cancer patients, has experienced an unexpected technical failure and is currently out of service," the statement read.
The hospital emphasized the urgency of maintaining continuous oncology services and revealed that alternative measures have already been activated.
“We recognize the critical importance of uninterrupted oncology services, and we immediately activated referral protocols to safeguard patient care," the statement continued.

Additionally, KNH announced that another cancer treatment machine that had broken down has been restored and is now operational.
“KNH is also pleased to inform the public that the Cobalt radiotherapy machine, which had previously broken down, has now been fully restored and is operational," the statement added.
Further, to ensure full services resume as soon as possible, the hospital said it is expediting the acquisition of a new LINAC machine.
“In the meantime, the procurement process for a replacement LINAC machine is being fast-tracked through the appropriate tendering procedures to restore full oncology services at the earliest possible time," the statement concluded.
