The officer has been identified as 32-year-old Police Constable Benard Koome Ithai.

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the fatal shooting of a police officer in Thika, Kiambu County.

In a statement on Thursday, June 19, NPS said Police Constable Benard Koome Ithai, aged 32, was on duty in the Cravers area of Thika Town when he was gunned down. 

"The National Police Service (NPS) is deeply saddened to inform the public of the death of Police Constable Benard Koome Ithai, aged 32, who was killed in the line of duty at Cravers area in Thika Town.

"The gallant officer was fatally shot by a criminal and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His next of kin was promptly informed," the statement read.

NPS noted that officers responded immediately to the scene and launched an investigation in collaboration with members of the public. 

"Following this tragic incident, police officers responded immediately and, working in collaboration with members of the public, launched an investigation. Currently, officers are pursuing critical leads to apprehend the assailant,” the statement added.

Authorities are now appealing to the public for any information that could aid the ongoing investigations.

"We commend members of the public for providing crucial information regarding the incident and appeal to anyone with further details that could assist the investigation to contact the nearest police station or use our toll-free numbers: 999, 911, 112, or #FichuakwaDCI (0800 722 203),” the NPS urged.

NPS also expressed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the slain officer. 

“As a service, we extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of the fallen officer and assure them of our unwavering support during this time of profound sorrow," the statement further read.
