The DCI has confirmed the recovery of a firearm that was stolen during June 25th protests.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the recovery of a firearm that was stolen during protests on Wednesday, June 25. 

In a statement on Saturday, June 28, the DCI said the AK-47 rifle, which was stolen from Dagoretti Police Post, was recovered by officers based at Kabete Police Station following a tip-off. 

"Officers from the National Police Service based at Kabete Police Station have recovered an AK 47 rifle stolen from Dagoretti Police Post during the June 25, 202,5 demonstrations," the statement read.

The recovery operation began after authorities received credible information about a suspicious individual spotted with a bulging bag at a bar in Gahui area.

"The breakthrough came after a tip-off about a suspicious individual carrying a bulging bag at Gravity Bar in Gahui area,” said the DCI.

Acting swiftly, police officers responded to the scene and utilized forensic leads to trace the suspect. 

“Responding swiftly, officers descended on the establishment and, aided by forensic leads, identified the suspect. The trail led officers to the suspect's residence in Njuki-Kirigu area. But upon spotting them, he vanished without a trace,” the statement continued.

Although the suspect managed to escape, a subsequent search at his residence led to the discovery of the gun and other items.

"A search of his home, conducted in the presence of his mother, uncovered an AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and a single round of 7.62mm special ammunition, all items confirmed to have been stolen from Dagoretti Police Post," the statement further read.

Authorities are now actively pursuing new leads in an effort to apprehend the fugitive. 

“A manhunt is now underway as investigators pursue fresh leads to bring the fugitive to justice,” the DCI confirmed.
