Former NHIF CEO Geoffrey Mwangi has spoken out after being summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nakuru over allegations of financing protests held on June 25.

Speaking on Thursday, July 3, Mwangi confirmed that he had been questioned regarding his alleged involvement in organizing the demonstrations. 

He strongly denied the claims, dismissing them as baseless and politically motivated.

"On Monday I was given a call from the DCI office here in Nakuru that I should visit them; I have seen my charges which include alleged meetings with demonstrators which are of course false," he said.

Mwangi, who declared his political ambitions, framed the summons as an attempt to intimidate those seeking political change.

"I have been grilled; I have given my version of the story and I want to state that we are in a democratic country where everyone is free to move and we are law-abiding citizens, we follow the law.

"We shall not be intimidated in our quest to change leadership; it is true that I'm an aspiring candidate in this country and when the time comes I'll be on the ballot," he added.

Following the widespread demonstrations on July 25, political leaders allied to President William Ruto have been calling for the arrest and prosecution of leaders allegedly involved in organizing and funding the demos.

As such, on Monday, June 30, DCI boss Mohamed Amin was forced to address speculations surrounding the prosecution of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in relation to the protests.

In a press briefing from the DCI Headquarters, Amin dismissed claims that the DCI had already summoned Gachagua for questioning.

However, the DCI boss was quick to assert that Gachagua is not above the law and would face prosecution if evidence linked him to unlawful activities during the protests.

"It is not true that we have summoned Rigathi Gachagua. However, I would like to point out very clearly that Rigathi Gachagua does not enjoy any immunity against prosecution.

"He is subject to the laws of the land and if in our investigations he is found to have been involved in any criminal activity, perpetrated any criminal activity, aided or abetted any criminal activity, then appropriate action will be taken against him," he said.
