The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that rain will persist across five regions this week.

In a weather forecast on Monday, July 7, the Met Department said the rainfall is expected over Central Highlands, including Nairobi.

Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and North Western Kenya regions will also experience rains this week.

“Rain is expected in the following areas: Central Highlands including Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and North-western Kenya,” read the forecast in part.

The Met Department also predicted cold and cloudy conditions over parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, South-eastern lowlands, and the Rift Valley.

Night-time temperatures of below 10°C are expected in the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, the Central Rift Valley, and the Vicinity of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

On the other hand, North-eastern Kenya and North-western Kenya will experience daytime temperatures above 30°C.

The weatherman also warned of strong Southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) over the Coast and Kenya’s territorial waters.

The strong winds will also be experienced in the South-eastern lowlands and the North-eastern and North-western Kenya regions.

The weather forecast comes days after the Met Department warned of increased cases of respiratory illnesses such as asthma, pneumonia, flu, and the common cold.

In a statement on July 1, the Met department said the illnesses are likely to be experienced in Nairobi, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, parts of the Central and South Rift Valley, and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley.

“To avoid contracting diseases, the general public is advised to dress warmly and to follow the advice of the Ministry of Health. They are also advised not to use charcoal jikos in poorly ventilated homes because they emit carbon monoxide gas, which is life-threatening if inhaled,” the weatherman stated.
