The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has elected commissioner Fahima Araphat Abdallah as the new Vice Chairperson of the commission.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has elected Commissioner Fahima Araphat Abdallah as the new Vice Chairperson of the commission.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon made the announcement on Friday, July 11, following a plenary session held at the commission’s boardroom.

"Following the gazettement and subsequent swearing in of the Chairperson and members of the Commission, we are pleased to announce to members of the public and stakeholders that the Commission in its 288 Plenary Meeting elected Commissioner Fahima Araphat Abdallah as the Vice Chairperson of the Commission,” the statement read.

Ethekon congratulated Abdallah and reiterated the commission's dedication to upholding democratic values in the country.

“The Commission takes this opportunity to congratulate Commissioner Fahima on her election. We assure members of the public and our stakeholders that the Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening Kenya's democracy,” the statement added.

This election came shortly after the gazettement and swearing-in of Ethekon as the new IEBC Chairperson and six others as commissioners.

Ethekon acknowledged the weight of the responsibility entrusted to him and vowed to serve the nation with integrity and impartiality.

"I, Erastus Edung Ethekon, having been appointed the Chairperson of IEBC, do solemnly swear that I will at all times obey, respect, and uphold the Constitution of Kenya and all other laws of the country.

"I will faithfully and fully, to the best of my ability, discharge the trust and perform the functions bestowed upon me by this appointment, without fear, favour, bias, ill-will or prejudice. So help me God," he swore.

The six commissioners who were also sworn in are Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima who has now landed a new role.
