IEBC has flagged a post claiming it has received 60 petitions to recall Members of Parliament.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed claims that it has received 60 petitions recalling Members of Parliament.

In a statement on Saturday, July 19, IEBC flagged a viral post circulating on social media claiming the commission received nearly 60 petitions.

The electoral body clarified that no such number of petitions has been formally received by the commission and termed the post as fake.

“Fake News Alert,” IEBC stated.

Addressing the media on Saturday, IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon revealed that the commission has received four separate petitions from members of the public recalling certain MPs.

The IEBC chair, however, did not disclose the details of the four constituencies where locals want their lawmakers recalled.

Ethekon said the commission would review and examine the four petitions before making a response.

"Kenyans are actively discussing this subject of recall. So we have currently received roughly four applications, and we will look at them once we get back to the office," Ethekon said.

He also noted that Kenyans have the right to recall their leaders per the constitution, and the commission is ready to receive the petitions.

"It is the right of every Kenyan to exercise the right to recall under the Constitution, and as the IEBC, we will be there to do what the law allows us to do. We will receive those petitions, examine them, and then respond to them,” Ethekon added.
