According to Mwagodi’s sister, Issabella Kituri, the activist has been working for the Amani Beach hotel in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam.
She noted that Mwagodi's employer tried reporting him as a missing person to the Tanzanian authorities, but they was told to wait for 24 hours.
This comes a month after Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan lawyer Agatha Atuhaire were arrested in Dar es Salaam.
They had travelled to the East African nation to observe court proceedings of Tanzanian opposition figure Tundu Lissu, who is charged with treason.
Mwangi and Agatha were held in an unknown location and tortured for days before being deported.
Mwangi resurfaced on May 22, 2025, in Ukunda, Kwale County, and was taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Speaking after the ordeal, Mwangi said they were treated inhumanely and were tortured during their detention.
“I have gone through four very dark days, I have been tortured very badly, I can barely walk,” Mwangi revealed.
“We had been tortured, and we were told to strip naked and to go bathe. We couldn't walk and were told to crawl and go wash off the blood."
