Muriuki takes over from David Gikungu, who retired on Monday, July 28, 2025.

State Department of Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno has appointed Edward Maina Muriuki as the acting Director of Meteorological Services at the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).

Muriuki takes over from David Gikungu, who retired on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Speaking after his appointment, Muriuki described it as a significant milestone in his career as a meteorologist.

“This appointment marks a significant milestone in my career as a Meteorologist, and I look forward to enhancing the science of Meteorology and Hydrology in Kenya.

“I look forward to working closely with all our staff at KMD as well as our partners to improve weather and climate service delivery in the Country,” said Muriuki.

Muriuki, a career Meteorologist at KMD, holds a Master of Science Degree in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, PG Diploma (Hydrology), and a Bachelor of Science (Maths and Meteorology), both from the University of Nairobi.

He joined the Meteorological Department in 1991 and has since served in various technical and administrative roles, including Senior Assistant Director in multiple divisions, Deputy Director of Technical and Support Services, and Principal of the World Meteorological Organization Regional Training Centre at the Institute for Meteorological Training and Research in Nairobi.

Muriuki also served as the Deputy Director in charge of the Forecasting Services branch before his appointment as the acting Director of Meteorological Services.

PS Ng’eno expressed confidence that Muriuki’s vast experience will help steer the Met Department toward improved delivery of meteorological services.

“Mr. Muriuki’s vast experience and expertise will enable the Department to achieve its mandate for the provision of weather and climate information for the safety of life, protection of property, and conservation of the natural environment,” he stated.
