President William Ruto and his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta met on Friday at State House for a high-level meeting on the ongoing peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

President William Ruto and his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta met on Friday, August 1, at State House, Nairobi, for a high-level meeting on the ongoing peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The two leaders came together for the joint East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) Co-Chairs’ meeting with the Panel of Facilitators for the DRC Peace Process.

Photos released from the event showed Ruto and welcoming Uhuru to the meeting also attended by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In March, the Joint Summit of EAC and the SADC appointed former Uhuru and four other former African heads of state to lead the DRC peace talks. 

The summit which was co-chaired by Ruto and Mnangagwa also appointed Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, Kgalema Motlanthe, former President of South Africa, Catherine Samba Panza, former President of Central African Republic and Sahle-Work Zewde, former President of Ethiopia as facilitators of the DRC peace process.

The summit directed the EAC and SADC secretariats to notify the facilitators of their appointment and convey the outcomes of the Joint Summit to the African Union (AU) and the UN Security Council.

Earlier in February, Uhuru was appointed as a facilitator of the EAC and SADC joint peace process in the eastern DRC.

Uhuru was appointed alongside former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

"His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of SADC, and His Excellency, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, CGH, President of the Republic of Kenya and Chairperson of the EAC have continued engaging on the progress in the restoration of peace and security and in consultation with SADC and EAC Heads of State and Government have agreed on the appointment of H.E Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta former President of the Republic of Kenya; H.E Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and H.E Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe, the former Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia as Facilitators of the EAC–SADC peace process (the merged Luanda and Nairobi processes) in Eastern DRC," Ruto announced in a statement at the time.
