KeNHA has issued a traffic advisory warning motorists using Mombasa Road to exercise caution following two incidents.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic advisory warning motorists using Mombasa Road to exercise caution following two incidents that have disrupted normal traffic flow along the busy highway.

In a statement released on Friday, August 1, KeNHA confirmed that an overloaded truck had been intercepted at Athi River on the Nairobi-bound side of the road, blocking one lane and causing traffic buildup.

“Motorists plying Mombasa Road at Athi River, Nairobi Bound, are advised to exercise caution while driving as an overloaded truck has been intercepted, blocking one side of the road,” read part of the advisory.

The authority, however, assured users that necessary officers had been deployed to the area to ensure motorists' safe and smooth passage.

“The Axle Load Enforcement Highway Unit Police are on the ground settling the matter.”

In a separate incident, an accident occurred on the same Nairobi-bound lane of Mombasa Road at Maanzoni, further worsening the traffic situation.

“Similarly, an accident occurred on Mombasa Road at Maanzoni, Nairobi-bound, blocking the road,” the statement continued. “Thus, motorists are advised to exercise caution and cooperate with the traffic marshals on site while the scene is cleared.”

Incident Along Mombasa Road

These incidents come just days before the temporary closure of major Nairobi roads, including parts of Mombasa Road, for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, set to kick off on Sunday, August 3.

According to a separate traffic advisory released by police on Thursday, July 31, one side of Mombasa Road will be closed from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout to facilitate tournament logistics.

Authorities have provided alternative routes to minimize disruptions. Motorists heading to the CBD from Mombasa Road are encouraged to use Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.

Similarly, matatus ferrying passengers to Kasarani Stadium have been directed to use Ruaraka Baba-Dogo and Ngomongo roads.
