PS for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, has confirmed that four more people have passed while receiving treatment, bringing the toll to 25.

Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, has confirmed that 25 people have now lost their lives following a tragic road accident at the Coptic area in Mamboleo, Kisumu County.

Twenty-one victims died on the spot, while four others succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment in the hospital.

He added that 29 patients remain admitted, including a child.

The crash, which occurred on Friday, August 8, involved a school bus ferrying mourners from Nyahera in Kisumu County.

According to Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina, the vehicle rolled over while attempting to navigate a bend along the Kisumu-Kakamega road.

In earlier statements, the victims include 10 men, 10 women, and an eight-month-old baby. Passengers who sustained injuries and were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, with five of them reported to be in critical condition.

President William Ruto sent condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a quick recovery.

In a statement, he urged traffic enforcement officers to swiftly act against any negligence that may have contributed to the accident and called for stricter enforcement of road safety measures across the country.

“We ask traffic enforcers to act swiftly to bring to book those responsible for any acts of negligence leading to the accident and address all traffic violations to ensure road safety across the country,” Ruto said.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o said his administration is working with relevant authorities to support victims and their families. He assured the people of Nyakach and Nyahera of the County Government’s solidarity during this period of grief.

Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga condoled with the families affected by the accident and commended Kisumu County for its swift response in launching emergency audits on long-distance buses, deploying counseling teams, and reinforcing road safety measures.

“As Governor of Homa Bay, I stand in solidarity with my brother, Kisumu Governor Professor Peter Anyang' Nyong'o, and extend my deepest condolences to the families and the entire Kisumu County," Wanga stated.
