Seven people were arrested Thursday after police discovered a counterfeit US dollar operation in Nairobi.

Seven people were arrested on Monday, August 11, after police discovered a counterfeit US dollar operation in Nairobi.

According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), National Police Service officers from Central Police Station acted on intelligence to arrest the suspects at Travellers House in Ngara.

The arrested include Manyara Aroon Nicas, a Tanzanian national, and Abbott Antony, a Congolese national. Five Kenyans, Mongele Wambura, James Ngugi, Justus Alubokho Opulu, and Mary Mumbi, were also arrested.

During the raid, police discovered several items used in the counterfeit operation.

“Upon searching the premises, the officers uncovered thirty-six bundles of counterfeit US currency, two plastic replicas resembling USD notes, black paper resembling currency, and other items believed to be involved in this illicit activity,” the statement reads.

The suspects are in custody and will appear in court.

In a different raid, detectives arrested a man who stole from a tourist at Maasai Mara Game Park.

DCI noted on Sunday, August 10, that detectives from the Nairobi Region Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau arrested Kenas Okello Oyugi.

The victim was a Greek national who arrived in Nairobi on August 5, 2025. The next day, he traveled to Maasai Mara with his tour guide and a person he met online who called himself "Jeremiah John."

At the park, Jeremiah disappeared with three debit cards, a mobile phone, and a wristwatch. Soon after, 25,000 euros were taken from the tourist's bank account.

Police investigations showed that "Jeremiah John" was a fake name. Through forensic analysis, detectives identified the suspect as Kenas Okello Oyugi and arrested him at his hideout.

“Upon his arrest, detectives recovered mobile phones, a Seiko Crystal wristwatch, Kshs 54,050, and cash in US dollars. They also seized a brand-new tour trek bicycle, believed to have been purchased with the stolen funds,” DCI confirmed.

Okello is being held at Central Police Station and will appear in court.
