Moi University has assured students, parents, and stakeholders that academic programmes will continue uninterrupted despite a strike notice issued by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) on August 12, 2025.
In a notice dated Thursday, August 14, the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kiplangat Kotut, emphasised that the University remains fully committed to maintaining academic progression and delivering quality education.
He reiterated that teaching, examinations, research, and all academic activities are proceeding as scheduled, including preparations for the first-year students' reporting on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Kotut acknowledged the concerns raised by UASU and confirmed that the University Council and management are in active discussions with union leaders, the Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders to address the matter through constructive dialogue.
He stressed that the goal is to resolve all issues amicably, safeguarding the welfare of staff while ensuring that learning and research are not disrupted.

“Our objective is to resolve all matters amicably, in a manner that safeguards the welfare of staff, while ensuring that learning and research activities proceed without distraction,” the notice read.
Kotut also urged students to remain focused on their studies and reassured parents and guardians that the academic welfare of their children remains the university’s top priority.
“Moi University remains steadfast in its mandate as a leading institution of higher learning and continues to uphold the values of professionalism, transparency, and accountability in all its engagements,” the notice assured.
UASU issued a 7-day strike notice on Wednesday, August 13, over grievances linked to delayed salaries and unfulfilled agreements.
In the notice, signed by Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, the union accused Moi University of failing to pay lecturers their June and July 2025 salaries in line with the rates stipulated in the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
UASU also demanded a full implementation of the Return-to-Work Formula agreed upon with the University Council on November 30, 2024. This includes reviewing and promoting staff, adjusting retirement ages, and upholding the fundamental labour rights and freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution of Kenya.
According to the union, its members will withdraw their services from Wednesday, August 20, 2025, unless all their demands are met.
