The Senate will convene for a special sitting on Wednesday, August 20, to consider urgent matters, including the impeachment proceedings against Kericho Governor Erick Mutai.
In a gazette notice on Monday, August 18, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that the sitting had been scheduled following a request by the Senate Majority Leader and a communication from the Kericho County Assembly.
"Pursuant to Section 33 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader with the support of the requisite number of Senators; and further upon receipt of a letter from the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kericho, Ref: KCA/SP/3 Vol. 1 (39), dated 15th August, 2025 and received in the Office of the Speaker of the Senate on 18th August, 2025, by which the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kericho informed the Speaker of the Senate of the approval of a motion for the removal from office by impeachment of Hon. (Dr.) Erick Kipkoech Mutai, the Governor of Kericho County," the notice read.
Kingi explained that the Senate would reconvene on Wednesday, with the session scheduled to take place in the Senate Chamber from 2:30 PM.
"I have appointed Wednesday, 20th August, 2025 as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. The sitting shall be held at the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 2.30 p.m," the notice added.

Kingi noted that Senators would first witness the swearing-in of Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi before turning to the impeachment proceedings against Governor Mutai and adjustments to the Senate Calendar.
"The business to be transacted at the sitting shall be, swearing-in of Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi, a Senator elected under Article 98 (1) (b) of the Constitution; the hearing of the charges against Hon. (Dr.) Eric Kipkoech Mutai, the Governor of Kericho County; alteration of the Senate Calendar,” the notice further read.
Mutai was impeached after a dramatic session in the Kericho County Assembly on Friday, August 15, marking the second attempt to remove him from office in less than a year.
The motion, tabled by MCA Kiprotich Rogony of Sigowet Ward, accused Mutai of reckless abuse of office and mismanagement of Ksh85 million, allegedly paid to contractors who failed to deliver any work.
Despite his strong denial of the allegations, all 33 MCAs present supported the motion, sealing his removal.
The Assembly proceedings quickly spiraled into chaos once the impeachment vote was confirmed; a scuffle broke out among legislators, leaving one MCA injured.
Outside, tensions spilled over as youth protestors clashed with security forces, resulting in the overturning of a county government vehicle.
This marks the second time Mutai has faced impeachment.
In October 2024, a similar motion passed at the County Assembly saw him impeached by 31 MCAs but the Senate overturned the decision, citing flaws in the process and failure to meet the two-thirds threshold required by law.
"The motion having been approved the hearing proceedings on proposed removal from office by impeachment of Erick Mutai, the Governor of Kericho County is hereby terminated," Kingi said at the time.
