Northern Kenya leads in BBG support with 61% approval.

A new opinion poll shows that the Mt Kenya region has registered the lowest percentage in support of the Kenya Kwanza Broad-Based Government.

According to a report by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA), only 11% of respondents in the Mt Kenya region expressed support for the Broad-Based Government (BBG), while a staggering 83% opposed it.

The TIFA poll reveals significant regional disparities in support for the coalition government across different parts of the country.

Northern Kenya leads in BBG support with 61% approval, followed by President William Ruto's home region of Central Rift at 45%.

Nyanza shows 34% support for the broad-based government, while Western Kenya registers 31% backing. The capital city, Nairobi, shows 26% support for the coalition arrangement.

Other regions show varying levels of support: South Rift at 23%, Lower Eastern at 23%, and the Coast region at 17%. The national average stands at 29% support for the BBG.

The poll indicates that opposition to the broad-based government is highest in Mt Kenya, at 83%, followed by the Coast region, at 75%, and Lower Eastern, at 68%. South Rift shows 67% opposition, while Nairobi residents oppose the BBG at 64%.

Western Kenya records 63% opposition, Nyanza at 58%, Central Rift at 50%, and Northern Kenya shows the lowest opposition at 35%.

President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The coalition arrangement was formalized when President Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga entered a memorandum of understanding at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in March 2025.

This partnership between the United Democratic Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement aimed to tackle pressing national issues including debt management, corruption, and political instability.

The formation of this government followed President Ruto's decision to dismiss nearly his entire cabinet in July 2024, responding to widespread public protests against proposed tax increases and concerns over government corruption.

This dramatic move was part of broader efforts to create a more inclusive administration.

President Ruto has consistently advocated for the benefits of the broad-based approach, arguing that national unity would be more beneficial than a country divided along ethnic lines.

The Orange Democratic Movement officially endorsed the Kenya Kwanza administration and committed to working with President Ruto in implementing the broad-based government agenda. ODM established a 10-member technical committee to collaborate with United Democratic Alliance counterparts in overseeing the implementation of their partnership agreement.
