He noted that the Ithookwe stadium will be a home for sporting excellence and youth empowerment.

“Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County now stands fully complete and ready to host this year's Mashujaa Day celebrations on Monday, 20th October.

“Beyond the celebrations, Ithookwe will remain a home for sporting excellence, cultural expression and youth empowerment,” said Omollo.

The interior PS also mentioned that the stadium will breathe new life into the local economy, energizing small businesses, hospitality and transport sectors in Kitui.

Mashujaa Day, formerly known as Kenyatta Day, was renamed after the 2010 Constitution to honour all national heroes.

In 2016, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta devolved national celebrations. In the arrangement, counties host two of the three annual national holidays on a rotational basis.

Nairobi retains one holiday, the Independence Day on December 12, otherwise known as Jamhuri Day.

Previously, all the national holiday celebrations were celebrated in Nairobi.
