The Easter weekend in Kirinyaga County appears to have been hit with sorrow after a couple drowned in Nyamindi River on Sunday, April 4, 2021.
An eyewitness revealed that the incident occurred while the couple were taking selfies along the banks of the river.
The eyewitness since identified as Eliud Muriithi stated that the two arrived on a motorcycle, parked it on the side, and started walking as they enjoyed the scenery.

They proceeded to take selfies along the bank of the river and this is when they tripped and fell in the water.
"We saw the duo taking a selfie before suddenly plunging into the river. It was then that we rushed to the scene and tried to rescue them in vain,” Muriithi narrated.
“They were clinging onto each other. It was a very sad and emotional incident," he added.
The residents said that they had tried to warn the couple against exposing themselves like that, but they did not listen.
"We shouted in warning when we saw the danger they were exposing themselves to but they would not listen to us," Muriithi stated.
They rushed to try and rescue the couple but in vain. He revealed that the couple was not from the area, they had just gone there to have some fun.
"They were celebrating Easter when the incident happened. They were carried away with the water and that is when we told the police," Muriithi stated.
He added that the bodies of the couple were yet to be retrieved from the river.
Gichugu Sub-County DCI boss Millicent Ochuka stated that police had joined the search and would not rest until they retrieve the bodies.
