Six Members of Parliament and the new Baringo Senator were on Tuesday, December 2, sworn into office, replacing leaders who passed away, joined the Cabinet, or had their election results nullified.

Before the swearing-in, the Clerk of the National Assembly, Samuel Njoroge, conducted an orientation session for the members-elect at the Speakers’ Gardens, Main Parliament Buildings.

The session covered registration and collection of bio-data, briefings on the chamber system, a familiarization tour of the precincts of Parliament, and an overview of key legislative matters.

All six MPs took their oath of office before the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula.

Ahmed Maalim Hassan, the newly elected MP for Banissa Constituency, replaces the late Kulow Maalim Hassan, who died in a road accident in March 2023.

David Athman Ndakwa, the new MP for Malava Constituency, takes over from the late Malulu Injendi, a three-term lawmaker who passed away in February 2025 after battling an illness.

Boyd Were Ongondo, elected to represent Kasipul Constituency, succeeds his father, the late Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was fatally shot on the evening of April 30, 2025.

Moses Okoth Omondi, the new MP for Ugunja Constituency, replaces former Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, who was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum in August 2024.

Leo Wa Muthende Njeru, elected to represent Mbeere North Constituency, takes over from Geoffrey Ruku, who joined the Cabinet as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes.

In the Senate, Kiprono Cheburet Chemitei was sworn in as the new Baringo Senator following a by-election prompted by the death of Senator William Cheptumo.

Nyamira Senator Okong’o Mogeni congratulated Chemitei, encouraging him to serve diligently and embrace the Senate’s culture of unity.

"We are brothers and sisters and I have no doubt that you will flourish as a Senator in this House," he said.

Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot also welcomed Chemitei, assuring him of full support from colleagues and parliamentary staff as he settles into his new role.

"I have no doubt that young Senator Chemitei joins us with great potential, which will be sharpened in the coming days as he interacts with colleagues, receives training from highly competent staff and learns from the many members here who represent diverse facets of life.

"I am convinced that the people of Baringo made the right decision in sending us such a brilliant young man to join other young leaders in this House who continue to work tirelessly to ensure that devolution succeeds in this country," he said.
