Police officers in Kiambu County have recovered a stolen G3 rifle following an incident in which an armed individual was killed during a mob justice in the Magana area of Thika East, Kiambu County.

In a statement on Friday, December 5, the National Police Service (NPS) said officers from Munyu Police Station rushed to the scene after receiving a report from the local administration.

The officers recovered the firearm, two magazines, 68 rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition, blank rounds, a penknife, and other items.

“Police in Kiambu County are investigating an incident in the Magana area of Thika East Sub-County, where an armed individual was fatally injured by members of the public.

“Upon receiving information from the local administration, officers from Munyu Police Station rushed to the scene. There, they recovered a G3 rifle along with two magazines, 68 rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition, additional blank rounds, a penknife, and other related items,” read the statement in part.

NPS said the firearm and ammunition have been secured and placed in police custody for further forensic and ballistic analysis.

According to the service, the recovered gun is linked to a previous case where a firearm was reported missing within the Sub County.

“Preliminary inquiries indicate that the recovered firearm is linked to a previous incident involving the loss of a police firearm within the Sub-County.

“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding both incidents are ongoing,” NPS stated.

Further, the service urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminals to the authorities.

“The National Police Service appeals to members of the public to refrain from acts of mob injustice and instead to report suspected criminal activities to law enforcement authorities for appropriate and lawful action,” NPS added.

This comes weeks after police officers arrested a 21-year-old man and recovered an AK-47 rifle following a dramatic morning shootout near the Patel Samaj Temple along St. Otieno Oyoo Street in Kisumu.

The officers pursued the armed suspect, who attempted to take cover inside the temple premises.

Reinforcement teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, leading to a tense exchange before the suspect was subdued.

Kisumu Central Deputy Sub-County Police Commandant Bakari Mwanauli, while addressing the media after the incident, said the gun is linked to a series of robberies in Kisumu.

"This gun has been used in several robberies within the city, and the suspect who is in custody is one Kevin Oduor, aged about 21. He is currently in custody at the Kisumu Central Police Station, being interrogated before he can be arraigned in court," he stated.
