The holiday will be used to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr; end of the Holy month of Ramadhan.

Ministry of Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has declared Friday 14, 2021 a public holiday.

In a Gazette Notice issued on Friday, May 7, 2021, CS Matiang'i noted that the holiday will be used to mark Idd-ul-Fitr.

Idd-ul-Fitr is a celebration that marks the end of the Holy Month of Ramadhan among Muslims.

“IT IS notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Friday, the 14th May, 2021, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” the notice read in part.

Muslims across the country started their Ramadhan fast on April 14, 2021 after the moon was cited in India and Qatar.

While announcing the commencement of Ramadhan, Chief Kadhi Ahmed Muhdhar noted that he and his team were unable to cite the moon locally, therefore they decided to use citations from other countries.

"We have searched for the moon in Kenya and parts of Tanzania in vain. We pray for good health, during this time as we start the fasting from April 14, 2021,” he said.

Idd-ul-Fitr marks the first day of Shawwal; the 10th month in the Islamic calendar.
