Outrage as Ugandan Footballer is Killed in Street Gang Attack

SC Villa Football Club has announced the death of its captain, David Owori, after he was reportedly attacked by unknown individuals.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 5, the Ugandan club described Owori's death as a devastating loss, paying tribute to him as a respected leader and dedicated player

"SC Villa Football Club is devastated to confirm the death of its Club Captain, David Owori, following a brutal attack by unknown individuals," the statement read.

The club said Owori's passing had left a deep void among his family, teammates, supporters, and the wider football fraternity.

It noted that his leadership and commitment to the sport would be remembered by both the club and the nation.

"The Club commiserates with David's family, teammates, friends, supporters, and the entire football fraternity during this painful moment. David was a valuable player, leader, and servant of the game whose loss is deeply felt by both the Club and the nation," the statement added.

SC Villa also pledged to support the late captain's family and ensure that he receives a respectful farewell befitting his contribution to the club and Ugandan football.

"SC Villa undertakes to stand with the family and to ensure that David is accorded a decent and dignified send-off," the statement further read.

At the same time, the club appealed to security and law enforcement authorities to move swiftly in investigating the killing, arresting those responsible, and ensuring they face justice.

It described the attack as a senseless act that deprived the country of one of its committed footballers.

"We also call upon the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to urgently pursue, apprehend, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime. 

"This senseless act has robbed the Club and the country of a committed captain and a promising sportsman, and it must not go unanswered," the statement concluded.

This comes months after three suspects were arrested following the death of Ugandan professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, who died after being attacked by a mob.

Gongodyo, a key member of the Uganda Rugby Cranes and Pirates Rugby Club, died on Friday, June 5, after suffering severe injuries during the mob attack. 

According to reports, witnesses claimed he was assaulted by members of the public who accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag.

Police attached to Kira Road Police Station reportedly moved quickly after the incident, rushing him to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment. 

However, he later succumbed to his injuries at around 7:00 p.m.

Authorities identified the suspects as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, and Namukose Juliet in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
