Several Casualties Reported in Nasty Accident Along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

A multiple-car crash at Kijabe along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Monday, August 10, has resulted in mass casualties.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that it had deployed several of its crew to the scene to conduct a rescue mission.

In addition, the Social Health Authority (SHA) has also deployed several ambulances and first responders to the scene.

Video footage from the scene shows a white sports utility vehicle (SUV) totalled from the impact. The entire front section of the vehicle, the engine, and the driver and co-driver section were wrecked.

A 14-seater matatu, which was also part of the wreckage, was also damaged. Several casualties believed to be passengers aboard the matatu were lying on the road reserve, writhing in pain.

Police officers also arrived at the accident to safeguard the crash site and victims, and manage motor vehicle traffic in the affected area.

The law enforcement officers are yet to establish the cause of the accident. Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to avoid the route until the scene is cleared.

The accident happened several days after a bus ferrying students from the Technical University of Mombasa overturned along the Nairobi-Kisumu Highway. 

According to TUM, the accident happened after the driver lost control of the vehicle as he  attempted to avoid a head-on collision with a speeding saloon car

Two students were confirmed dead while 29 others were injured. The institution condoled with the deceased's families and friends. It also announced that it would offer counselling services for the survivors.

Siaya Governor James Orengo revealed that the students were travelling from Mombasa to Kisumu to pay their last respects to former student leader Elvis Otieno.

He also offered condolences to the families of the TUM students who lost their lives in the road accident.

"Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of several university students along the Awasi–Ahero highway. A journey of solidarity that ended in unimaginable grief.

"To the grieving families, friends, and the entire TUM comrade fraternity: my thoughts and prayers are with you during this dark hour. May God grant you strength, and may their young souls rest in eternal power," Orengo wrote.
