Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced that the Gikambura Modern Market in Kiambu County is nearing completion. 

In an update on Friday, August 14, PS Omollo said the construction of the market is substantially complete and only minor and external finishes remain.

PS Omollo described the Gikambura Market as a practical investment that translates the government’s aspirations into tangible development while giving local communities a stake in the future.

“The Gikambura Modern Market in Kiambu County is one such investment, creating space for enterprise while laying a stronger foundation for local economic growth.

“Construction began in May 2024 and is now substantially complete, with only minor internal and external finishes remaining,” read the statement in part.

PS Omollo noted that the Gikambura market will accommodate 340 traders through 100 shops and 208 stalls once operational. 

The market has also been equipped with a social hall, meeting rooms, offices, ICT hub, food court and kitchen, salon and barbershop, among other amenities. 

“The modern facility will accommodate more than 340 traders through 100 shops and 208 stalls, alongside a social hall, meeting rooms, offices, ICT hub, food court and kitchen, salon and barbershop, crèche, cold room, butchery and other essential amenities. It also provides ample parking and a children's play area,” he stated.

Further, PS Omollo said the market will provide a more orderly and dignified environment for small-scale traders while strengthening agro-based commerce and value addition in Kiambu.

This comes days after the Interior PS announced that the Kawaida ESP Market in Kiambaa Sub-County is nearing competition. 

Omollo said the Kawaida market is designed to provide traders with organized spaces and modern facilities intended to improve their trading experience.

"Kawaida ESP Market in Kiambaa Sub-County is among these transformative investments, providing organized trading spaces for hundreds of traders alongside modern amenities, including cold storage facilities, lactation rooms, clean ablution blocks, an ICT hub and social halls," the statement added.

Omollo said the project has also generated employment during its construction and is expected to create further economic opportunities through related services.
