Waiguru Throws Shade at Speaker Muturi over Coronation as Mt Kenya Spokesman

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has criticized National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for undergoing a coronation exercise to be the Mt Kenya region leader (spokesperson).

In a statement on Friday, Waiguru noted that such coronations only have meaning if they are done after consultations with the people and the leadership of the Mt Kenya region.

“While one cannot begrudge Speaker Muturi and others of their desire for some form of enthronement, without consultations & consensus with the leaders and the people of Mt Kenya such enthronements have little meaning politically.

“These ceremonies will not give him an upper hand because the people of Mt Kenya never had cultural kingpins and spokespersons until the colonialists came and installed the generally unpopular “paramount chiefs”,” she said.

According to Waiguru, the coronation will not give Speaker Muturi any advantage as he’ll still need to go back to the people to seek their votes.

She further noted that currently, President Uhuru Kenyatta is the undisputed leader of the region, adding that attempts to succeed while he’s still in office are ill-advised.

“Ultimately Speaker Muturi and others seeking votes from Mt Kenya and elsewhere will have to go to the ground and seek votes from the only legitimate determinants of leadership, the people.

“In the meantime, it must be remembered that as a political community our leader, H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta has not vacated his seat, and culturally we don’t inherit one when they are still alive,” she opined.

Meanwhile, Speaker Muturi has been off the public as he is undergoing a cultural eight-day coronation procedure.

The coronation exercise is set to be climaxed on Saturday, May 22, 2021, where he will be crowned as a Mt Kenya region spokesman

Reports indicate that Speaker Muturi is keen on being the Mt Kenya region leader after President Kenyatta leaves office in 2022.
