Lawmakers allied to Deputy President William Ruto are plotting the removal of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
Daily Nation on May 21, 2021, reported that Belgut Member of Parliament Nelson Koech has been mandated with collecting signatures from fellow MPs to initiate the ouster process.
The DP Ruto ally alleged that their camp has already reached out to MPs within ODM Leader Raila Odinga’s circle, seeking support for their bid.
The move by the DP Ruto MPs comes after persistent complains of police officers harassing politicians especially during the by-elections period. Koech alleged that Matiang’I is using police officers to intimidate politicians going up against Jubilee candidates.
Koech’s remarks add to Raila’s May 19, accusations of a certain high ranking government official’s meddling in his March 9, 2018 pact with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

On May 17, ODM leader led by Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna accused Matiang’I of deploying police officers to scuttle ODM meetings, and intimidate their leaders.
This is after law enforcement raided the home of Kisii County Governor James Ongwae while he was sharing a cup of tea with a section of ODM leaders.
Koech stated that the move to impeach Matiang’I had received the backing of 50 MPs as of yesterday, May 20.
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, a confidant of DP Ruto, claimed that the signature collection process will be concluded in two weeks.
“ODM were celebrating when the police were unleashed on us. Now, they too, were subject to police brutality in Bonchari. They understand that it is a problem we must address,” Sudi had earlier stated.
