Three more suspects, including a police officer, have been arraigned in court in connection with the murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was shot dead on July 29, in Upper Hill, Kilimani, Nairobi County.

In a statement on Wednesday, September 2, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said the suspects are Police Constable Collins Bett Kiplangat, Pius Muiruri Mbugua and Samuel Karanja Gathoni. 

The three were arrested on August 29, 2026, at Kyanja Height Flats in Nakawa Suburb, Kampala City, Uganda, before being deported to Kenya following an order issued by Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Aisu Nicholas at City Hall Court.

The ODPP said the prosecution successfully obtained an order allowing investigators more time to complete their work.

Senior Principal Magistrate Theresiah Nyangena has allowed an application by the prosecution and directed that the suspects remain in custody for a period of 30 days for investigation officers to complete investigations.

The prosecution told the court that the three suspects allegedly played vital roles in the brutal murder of Dr Mutiso. 

It was alleged that Bett and Muiruri were among those who planned the execution of the doctor and had maintained communication with Kenneth, a senior police officer whose issued Mini Jericho firearm was allegedly used to commit the offence.

Karanja, according to the prosecution, was the driver of a Toyota Prado that was trailing the vehicle in which the deceased was travelling in an Uber.

The prosecution further alleged that the suspects had been surveilling Dr Mutiso's movements before and on the day she was killed.

The court subsequently issued specific orders on where each of the three suspects would be held during the 30-day period granted to investigators.

Nyangena directed that Police Constable Bett be detained at Ruaraka police station, Mbugua be detained at Kileleshwa police station, while Gathoni will be detained at Milimani police station for a period of 30 days.

This comes weeks after the High Court in Nairobi granted four suspects accused of murdering Mutiso 14 days to undergo mental assessment before they are required to take plea in the case.

In a statement on Thursday, August 27, the ODPP confirmed that the suspects are politician Rose Mbithe, her daughter Angela Mulwa, her son Chris Mulwa and Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi.

According to the ODPP, the court order requires the suspects to undergo mental assessment before the plea-taking stage.

"The court order allows the suspects to undergo mental assessment before they are required to take plea in the murder case as per the law," the statement read.

The ODPP said the court has also issued directions on where the four suspects will be held as they await the next stage of the proceedings.

"Further, the court has directed that Chris Mulwa and Police Constable Kibelion be remanded at the Nairobi Remand, while Mbithe and her daughter Angela will be held at Langata Women’s Prison," the statement added.

The case will be mentioned before Justice Alexander Muteti on September 23 when the four suspects are expected to take plea.
