Matiang'i stated that some police officers had confided in him about unfair practices within the NPS.

Jubilee Party Presidential Hopeful Fred Matiang'i has claimed that law enforcement officers are demoralised over politics within the National Police Service (NPS).

Speaking on Inooro FM on Wednesday, September 2, Matiang'i claimed that a section of police officers had reached out to him to complain about the politicisation of police promotions.

He claimed that officers raised concerns over the promotion of under-qualified officers into high ranks within the NPS.

Matiang'i disclosed that he received the information from some senior police officers, whom he built a rapport with when he was in charge of the Interior docket.

"I speak to police officers everywhere including their bosses and the biggest complaint is that some officers are promoted to OCSs out of nowhere and when you look at his or her qualifications, you realise that qualified police were left behind.

"There is no procedure in these promotions, and this politicisation and confusion in the security sector is what has damaged the security sector," he stated

The former Interior Cabinet Secretary called out the government for having misplaced priorities following the launch of the new police uniforms. He claimed that the billions should have been used for other important projects that could have improved the police service.

Matiang'i stated that the stalled project to digitise the occurrence book (OB), the NPS medical insurance cover and improvement of the training process should have been given top priority.

He further accused some highly-placed state officials of benefiting from the new Ksh3 billion tender to supply the NPS with uniforms. 

His sentiments came after the NPS set the record straight regarding the procurement process of the new general duty police uniforms. 

The Police denied reports that Nalitex Limited was one of the firms given the tender to make the Kenya Police Service General Duty uniforms. It added that the firm did not feature anywhere in the NPS tender process.

NPS maintained that the tendering process was competitive, with M/s Bedi Investments Limited having satisfied all the requirements, hence the award; this after four textile firms were invited to bid, namely: Bedi Investments Limited, Rivatex East Africa Limited, Thika Textile Mills Limited, and Sunflag Textiles & Knitwear Mills.
