In a notice on Friday, September 4, the embassy said the closure is in observance of Labor Day. 

“We will be closed Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day,” the US Embassy stated. 

Americans celebrate Labor Day annually on the first Monday in September.

The holiday is dedicated to honoring the labor movement and recognizing the contributions of workers to the development of the US.

Normal operations in the US Embassy, Nairobi, will resume on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The US Embassy in Nairobi observes both US federal holidays and the Kenyan public holidays.

On Friday, July 3, the embassy was closed to mark Independence Day, which is celebrated annually in the United States.

"The U.S Embassy Kenya will be closed on Friday, July 3rd, 2026, in observance of Independence Day!" the embassy announced. 

United States Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is celebrated every year on July 4. 

The holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the 13 American colonies formally declared their independence from Great Britain.

The Declaration of Independence was drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson and approved by the Second Continental Congress. 

The Embassy was also closed on June 19 in observance of the Juneteenth celebrations and on May 25 for Memorial Day in America. 

Memorial Day, held annually on the final Monday of May, is a US public holiday set aside to commemorate soldiers who died in service to their country.

On January 19, the embassy was again closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is also referred to as MLK Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed on the third Monday of January each year.
