Why ODM Senator Wants Probe Into Death of KCB Data Protection Head

Nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana has called for an independent investigation into the death of Rosemary Koech-Kimwatu, the Head of Data Protection at KCB Bank Group.

Speaking on Thursday, September 10, Kibwana asked for clarity on whether an impartial investigation has been launched, which government agencies are handling the matter and what steps have been taken to guarantee transparency and a timely conclusion.

"We need to establish whether an independent and impartial investigation has been initiated, the agencies involved and what measures are being taken to ensure that the process is transparent and concluded without unnecessary delay," she said.

Kibwana has also called on the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare to determine whether physical and electronic evidence connected to the case has been preserved, secured and subjected to examination.

She said the inquiry should also examine broader workplace safety concerns, including the conditions under which employees operate and potential psychosocial risks. 

Kibwana wants the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services to assess the workplace environment in light of the concerns that have been raised.

"This matter also raises a wider question about how effectively employees are protected from bullying, harassment, intimidation and other psychosocial hazards, and whether they can report such conduct confidentially without fear of retaliation," she added.

Kibwana has further sought information on the protections and safeguards in place for workers who may face retaliation from senior managers or executives after raising concerns.

She has also requested an update on the Draft Code of Practice on Psychosocial Hazard Management, including when it is expected to be finalised and implemented.

Koech-Kimwatu died on Friday, August 21, 2026, at her home in Ngong, Kajiado County.

This comes months after nominated Senator Consolata Wakwabubi called for a thorough investigation into a fire incident that destroyed a dormitory at Lugulu Boarding Primary School.

In a statement on Thursday, July 23, the senator also conveyed her sympathies to the school's administration, parents and learners over the destruction of the school facility.

"I have received with deep concerns the news of the fire incident that destroyed a dormitory at Lugulu Boarding Primary School yesterday evening. I am profoundly grateful that no lives were lost and that no learner or member of staff was injured," she wrote.

Wakwabubi said the incident had caused distress and disruption to the school community, describing the destruction of the dormitory as a significant setback. P60

"I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the school's administration, parents, and learners for the distress and disruption caused by this unfortunate incident. The destruction of school facilities is a significant setback, but I am confident that through unity and collective effort, the school will recover and emerge stronger," she added.

Wakwabubi called on the relevant authorities to establish the cause of the fire and implement measures aimed at improving fire safety in learning institutions.

"I call upon the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and to ensure that appropriate measures are implemented to enhance fire safety in all our learning institutions. The safety and well-being of our children must remain a equinivicol priority," she further said.
