The Head of State was seen off by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, among other government officials, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). 

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, in a statement, said President Ruto is set to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. 

According to Mohamed, President Ruto will advance Kenya’s investment drive, unlock more African and global capital, and strengthen Africa’s role in shaping the global digital and AI economy.

“The President will seek partnerships across energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, health, agriculture and technology to create jobs, expand productive capacity and open new markets,” read the statement in part.

President Ruto will co-chair roundtables hosted by the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and Global Africa Business Initiative (GABI) alongside industrialist Aliko Dangote. 

The key focus of the meeting will be the planned Ksh2.2 trillion ($17 billion) East Africa Refinery in Lamu, which is expected to create more than 60,000 jobs. 

President Ruto will then co-lead the AI Middle Powers Initiative with his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb. 

The initiative aims at, enabling countries to combine computing resources, data and talent to build AI capabilities.

“Kenya will also advance the Africa Development Bank-backed AI 10 Billion Initiative, which aims to mobilise up to $10 billion by 2035 for investment across Africa and to position the continent as a builder and producer across the AI value chain,” Mohamed stated. 

President Ruto will also sign a global declaration and roadmap on child online AI safety alongside leaders from Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia 

He will then launch an Africa Resilience Compact using AI, satellite earth observation and predictive technologies to strengthen preparedness for El Niño and other climate shocks.


President Ruto will also attend the Next 3 Billion convening where he will position Kenya as a regional technology, trade and finance hub. 

Further, the President will advance National Basketball Association partnerships to expand sporting infrastructure and opportunities for Kenyan youth.

Meanwhile at the UN General Assembly address, President Ruto will champion an Africa-financing-Africa approach.

“With Africa holding more than $4 trillion in domestic savings and assets, Kenya will call for reforms and international guarantees to unlock more African capital for infrastructure and enterprise,” said Mohamed. 

He will also highlight the National Infrastructure Fund, which is designed to mobilize up to $40 billion without adding to public debt, and advance Africa’s call for greater representation in global institutions.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, President Ruto will engage Heads of State and Government, multilateral institutions and global corporations to expand trade, investment and diplomatic cooperation. 

Additionally, President Ruto will engage the Kenyan living in the US as the government advances a Diaspora Investment Platform to channel diaspora capital into productive investment at home.

This comes weeks after President Ruto flew to Zambia to attend the inauguration of President-elect Hakainde Hichilema. 

President Ruto arrived in Lusaka on Tuesday morning, September 1, after departing Nairobi for the ceremony, which brings together regional leaders and other dignitaries to witness Hichilema’s inauguration.

He landed at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, where he was received by Zambia’s Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Nicholas Phiri.

Before his departure from Nairobi, Ruto was seen off by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, among other government officials.
