Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has announced the appointment of new chief executives to head the KETRACO, the GDC and EPRA.

Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has announced the appointment of new chief executives to head the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO), the Geothermal Development Company Limited (GDC) and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

In a statement on Wednesday, September 30, Wandayi said the appointments will see Tom Odhiambo Imbo take over as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of KETRACO.

Stephen Kipsang Busieney has been appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of GDC while Edward Mwirigi Kinyua has been appointed Director General of EPRA.

Wandayi said the appointments had been approved in accordance with the laws governing the State corporations and the energy sector.

"Pursuant to the provisions of the State Corporations Act, Cap 446, the Companies Act, Cap 486 and the Energy Act, Cap 314, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has approved the appointments of the Chief Executive Officers of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd (KETRACO), the Geothermal Development Company Limited (GDC) and Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA)," the statement read.

Wandayi said the selection of the three officials followed recruitment exercises conducted by the respective boards of directors of the institutions.

"The appointments, which are to take effect immediately are a culmination of rigorous recruitment processes undertaken in accordance with the applicable laws and relevant Human Resource guidelines by the respective Boards of Directors of KETRACO, GDC and EPRA," the statement added.

Wandayi congratulated the appointees and expressed confidence in their role in implementing the government's agenda in the sector.

"The Cabinet Secretary takes this opportunity to congratulate the appointees and looks forward to their leadership in supporting the President's ambitious plans for the Energy and Petroleum Sector," the statement concluded.

KETRACO was founded on December 2, 2008. 

Its main role is to plan, design, construct, own, operate and maintain Kenya’s high-voltage electricity transmission network and regional power interconnectors.

It also facilitates regional electricity trade and helps evacuate power from generation plants to the national grid.

The GDC was founded in 2008 following the restructuring of Kenya’s energy sector. 

Its main role is to develop Kenya’s geothermal resources through exploration, drilling, development and management of geothermal steam fields. 

GDC supplies geothermal steam to power producers such as KenGen and private investors and also promotes the direct use of geothermal energy.

EPRA was established in 2019 under the Energy Act, 2019, as the successor to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). 

Its role is to regulate Kenya’s energy and petroleum sectors, including licensing operators, regulating electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply, and overseeing petroleum operations.

EPRA also sets and reviews electricity and petroleum tariffs, enforces technical, safety and environmental standards, and protects consumers and other stakeholders in the energy sector.
