Businessman Aliko Dangote has announced that the construction of the Dangote Refinery in Lamu will be complete by 2030.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, September 30, Dangote confirmed that the refinery would be completed within 40 months.

“Mr President and all other respected Presidents, and my brother Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, I want to assure you that we will come back here and commission this refinery 40 months from today," he stated.

The billionaire businessman stated that the refinery would produce several products, including crude oil, polypropylene and jet fuel. He added that the refinery will also produce 1,000 Megawatts of electricity.

"The EA refinery is designed to process approximately 700,000 barrels of crude per day. It will also generate 1,000 Megawatts of electricity - twice that of Lagos.

"We have one million tonnes of polypropylene and a base oil production that will supply at least 20 percent of jet oil produced by Europe and the United Kingdom," he stated.

Dangote intimated that the project started as a joke, a simple conversation after President William Ruto sent emissaries to him to confirm whether he could supply fertilisers to Kenya.

He stated that his company’s vision is to not only strengthen the East African Region’s energy security and serve the market, but also explore international opportunities.

“Our vision is to target opportunities across the Indian Ocean, thus reducing the region's dependence on imported refined products and retaining more value within the African economies,” he added.

The Dangote Group President responded to doubts about the project. He stated that he met with the same when he proposed to build the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Nigeria, but is confident that the same success can be repeated.

He said that he intends to take the lessons learnt from the refinery in Lekki and combine them with Kenyan talent, the East African Community, and global technology to build something bigger, better, and improved for the community in this region.

Other Leaders who graced the groundbreaking included President Yoweri Museveni, Benin's Romuald Wadagni, and Togo's President Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové. Former Nigerian Head of State Olusegun Obasanjo was also present.
