The wiper spokesperson noted that picking a presidential candidate can't be a light issue to be handled in funerals.
A section of the Wiper Patriotic Front leadership seems disturbed by the opposition's strategy for the 2027 presidential vote, raising the alarm over what it suggests as a casual approach to identifying a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 pesidential election.
Ndegwa Njiru, the spokesperson for the Kalonzo Musyoka-led party, suggested the naming of the candidate as one of the most consequential decisions ahead of the vote.
In a statement on X Sunday, October 4, Njiru criticised the manner in which opposition principals appear to be handling the flag bearer question, warning that such a weighty matter demands a deliberate and formal process.
"A critical decision on the selection of the United Alternative Government's flag bearer cannot be taken at a funeral," Njiru said.
Njiru's remarks appeared directed at a gathering of opposition principals at the funeral of Martha Karua's father in Kirinyaga, where the tone of discussions reportedly veered into presidential succession territory.

Njiru suggested that announcements of such magnitude require a proper political forum rather than a social occasion.
His statement also amounts to an endorsement of Kalonzo as the most viable opposition challenger, positioning Wiper's principal as the preferred candidate to take on Ruto.
The opposition landscape ahead of 2027 is far from settled.
Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has been reassuring supporters that unity will hold and that extensive consultations will guide the selection of the strongest challenger.
He has cautioned that premature declarations could hand Ruto a tactical advantage, while also indicating that figures who do not make the final ballot would be considered for influential roles in a future government, including parliamentary leadership and Cabinet positions.
Karua of the People's Liberation Party, Eugene Wamalwa of DAP Kenya, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, who is operating under the Jubilee Party banner, are among the other figures positioning themselves for a presidential bid.
Senator Edwin Sifuna of Linda Mwananchi has also been fronted as a candidate.
Sifuna has previously addressed concerns that his movement could fragment the opposition vote to Ruto's benefit, consistently arguing that toppling a sitting president requires the broadest possible coalition.
He has also been candid about the difficulty of unseating Ruto, acknowledging that any internal division within the opposition would essentially secure the president a second term.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, himself a member of Linda Mwananchi, has warned that the opposition risks defeat if it fails to settle on a candidate before the end of December 2026.
