The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has released an update on textbooks that will be used by Grade 11 learners when the new grade is rolled out in 2027.
In a notice on Tuesday, October 6, KICD said it has approved textbooks and literary texts in preparation for the implementation of Grade 11.
"The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development has released the list of approved Grade 11 textbooks and literary texts in readiness for the Grade 11 rollout next year, 2027," the notice read.
KICD cautioned schools and other stakeholders against using textbooks that have not been approved, warning that such use is against the law.
"Use of unapproved textbooks is in contravention of Section 27 of the KICD Act 2013, and anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law," the notice added.

KICD further addressed schools that may experience challenges with the distribution of textbooks provided by the Government ahead of the Grade 11 rollout.
"Schools that will not have received the required textbooks distributed by the Government by mid-January 2027, or that receive excess copies than the required number based on their learners' enrolment numbers, are advised to contact the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) through email: [email protected]. or telephone: 0733762412 for assistance and clarification," the notice concluded.
This comes months after the Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) moved to reassure schools, teachers, and stakeholders following claims suggesting that some of its curriculum books had been withdrawn from use.
In a notice on Tuesday, February 17, KLB noted that there has been no directive from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) withdrawing any of its learning materials.
"Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) wishes to inform all our customers, partners and stakeholders that none of our curriculum books have been withdrawn by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD)," the notice read.
KLB reassured the public that its curriculum publications remain officially recognized and have not been removed from the approved list.
"All our books, currently in circulation, are duly approved by KICD and remain valid for use in Kenyan schools," the notice added.
Prior to that, KICD had released the official list of approved Grade 10 textbooks ahead of the rollout of Senior School under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The approved books cover all pathways offered at Senior School, including Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences, Humanities and Business Studies, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Applied Sciences and Technical Studies.
