Kenya Railways explained that the track under rehabilitation branches from the Mombasa-Nairobi main line at the Voi Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) station and runs Southwest across Taita Taveta County to Taveta near the Kenya -Tanzania border.

"The connection at Taveta will link Kenya’s railway network to Tanzania through the Holili border, creating opportunities for cross-border trade and strengthening regional connectivity," Kenya Railways added.

The corporation noted that the project is laying the foundation for more efficient transport, expanded trade opportunities and sustainable economic growth for communities in Taita-Taveta County and the wider region.

Earlier, Kenya Railways urged residents living within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area to consider using its commuter trains to beat the traffic during rush hour.

It shared its commuter rail service schedule with routes to Embakasi, Syokimau, Limuru, Lukenya and Ruiru, promising customers a more efficient commute.

"Queuing to get where you are going should not be on your list in 2026. Board our Commuter Trains from any Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) station near you and put the long wait behind you," the organisation wrote.

It also urged Kenyans to explore other services it offers, such as long-distance passenger and freight services.
