Sifuna and Natembeya were denied a chance to address mourners after MP Wamboka led 'Wantam' chants during the police boss's funeral.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna claimed that the officers running the funeral programme of the late SAIG Lazarus Opicho denied him a chance to address mourners because the government feared the Opposition.

Speaking in Trans Nzoia County on Friday, October 16, Sifuna said he was attending Opicho's funeral to mourn his distant cousin, not to play politics.

He added that the decision by SAIG Masoud Mwinyi to deny him and Natembeya an opportunity to address mourners was part of the issues he would address when he becomes President.

"The people in government are living in fear. Whenever they see Opposition Leaders together, they tremble and forget that we are ordinary Kenyans just like them.

"I want DIG Lagat and DIG Masengeli to understand that we have forgiven them for whatever has happened today because the one with a problem is their boss. All of them could have been fired today," he said.

Sifuna promised to restore the independence of the National Police Service. He added that uniformed officers should not be in a position where they are scared of being seen with Opposition leaders.

The Linda Mwananchi Movement Leader stated that he has no bad blood with police officers, and listed several ways he has pushed for their welfare at the Senate.

He reiterated how he advocated for them when they had issues with their medical insurance after they were onboarded to the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Sifuna promised that if elected President, he would allocate affordable housing units to officers to restore their dignity, as most of them live in deplorable conditions.

"When I am sworn in as the Sixth President, I will take these houses that Ruto is building and give them to the police officers," he added.

The Nairobi Senator maintained that the main issue with the police is interference by President William Ruto, whom he accused of disrespecting the Constitution.

He added that Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya's security was withdrawn because of his support for his Presidential bid.

According to Sifuna, Natembeya is targeted because he succeeded in uniting the Luhya vote behind one leader, a feat he claimed has not been achieved by the multiple Luhya leaders.
