Among the victims were a woman who was waiting to board a matatu heading towards Nairobi CBD and a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle.

Two other passengers who were in the back seat of the vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical attention.

Following the incident, angry Boda boda riders at the scene allegedly set the vehicle on fire.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the City Mortuary.

This comes days after 22 people perished following a devastating collision between a bus and a lorry at a spot along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.

Twenty people had died on the spot, with two of the victims succumbing to injuries sustained in the crash after the initial toll was recorded.

The accident took place at around 7 am on Sunday, October 25, in the Kanga area of Mtito Andei, when the two vehicles struck each other head-on.

Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif had earlier confirmed 20 fatalities before the toll rose to 22.

The bus involved in the crash belonged to a church, and those on board were returning home from a funeral service when the collision occurred.

Several survivors sustained injuries and were rushed to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital for treatment. The bodies of those who perished have been transferred to the hospital's mortuary.

Following the accident, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said improper overtaking may have contributed to the fatal crash.

The authority said investigators suspected that an overtaking manoeuvre may have played a role in the accident.

"Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicles collided head-on and suggest that improper overtaking may have contributed to the crash," NTSA said.
