Coast-based Human rights group Haki Africa has called for the postponement of the Msambweni by-election due to the rising Covid-19 cases in the country.

In a statement released on Monday, Haki Africa claimed that “irresponsible political activities within Msambweni” is putting residents at high risk of contracting the virus.

Haki Africa wants the polls postponed until such a time when the corona virus pandemic will have been fully dealt with.

“HAKI Africa calls for indefinite postponement of the #Msambweni by-elections slated for 15th Dec 2020 as a result of the worsening second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic which has been greatly exacerbated by irresponsible political activities within Msambweni ,” the group tweeted.

Meanwhile, campaigns are in top gear in Msambweni with the battle seen as one pitting pitting ODM against Deputy President William Ruto and his Hustlers brigade.

Joho vs Ruto

Las week, IEBC cleared candidates for the contest. Several top ODM leaders pitched camp in the area drumming support for their candidate Omar Boga.

Speaking during the campaign tour, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho dared DP Ruto to man up and face him on the ground.

"I won't allow anyone to even imagine that they can come and play with us in our region, be it William Ruto or his people. In fact, he is such a coward! He's so afraid to come here that he is just sending his people…  If you're man enough come here, don't play Msambweni politics in Nairobi at Karen there sending and posting pictures! Come here and let's meet man to man," Joho said.

In the upcoming by-election, DP Ruto is supporting Independent Candidate Faisal Bader.
