Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has claimed that he is the second most popular presidential candidate in the Mt Kenya region after Deputy President William Ruto.
Speaking during a panel discussion at a local media outlet on Thursday, Mutua noted that the DP should be credited for “fracturing” the Mt Kenya region despite being an outsider.
According to Mutua, despite President Uhuru Kenyatta being the leader of the Mt Kenya region, a latest poll conducted by his team revealed that the DP is the most popular in the region at the moment, followed by him.
“When I listen to the people of Mt Kenya, Mt Kenya people have not made up their mind. There is a big support for William Ruto on the ground of Mt Kenya…The latest poll that we have done ourselves show that William Ruto is the most popular candidate in Mt Kenya followed by myself Alfred Mutua and then others…But the gap is big I’m not close to William Ruto, he has been on the ground for a long time,” Mutua opined.

According to Mutua, the DP capitalized on the President’s numerous foreign trips to pitch camp in the region and paint a picture of an absent president.
“The trick he used to do, when the President was overseas, he would go to Harambees and say nimetumwa na rais mimi nimewaletea yangu milioni mbili na rais amewapatia three hundred thousand yake amenisindikiza. He kept on doing that and it made the President look like he was absent from the region, and he was heavily campaigning on that region trying to ride on Uhuru’s ability in that region,” Mutua added.
Governor Mutua has declared interest in the 2022 Presidency and is expected to faceoff with among others; DP Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana.
