New details have emerged indicating that the driver behind the nasty crush that led to the death of Nelly Waithera; daughter of Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua fled the scene of the crime, before detectives traced and arrested him.
Making his submissions at a Nairobi Court on Friday, Police Constable Peter Ndirangu claimed that the driver Peter Macharia had no intentions of reporting the incident or taking responsibility.
“The suspect’s action of escaping from the scene is a clear indication that he had no intention of reporting the accident or presenting himself to any police station or police officer,” Ndirangu told the court.
Ndirangu urged the court to allow the police detain Macharia for an additional four days in order to allow for investigations into the incident.

“That this court be pleased to issue a custodial order that the respondent be detained for four days at central police station as a postmortem has been booked and scheduled for today (Friday),” Ndirangu urged the court.
Ndirangu’s prayer was accepted by Senior Resident Magistrate Esther Kimilu who directed that Macharia be detained for an additional four days to pave way for investigations.
The case is set to resume on June 24, 2021.
Meanwhile, according to a police report, Nelly was crossing from Tom Mboya street on Thursday at around 8:00PM when a reversing KMO shuttle matatu crushed her against a City Shuttle sacco matatu.
“This occurred today on 17/6/2021 at about 0800hrs along Tom Mboya street – Muranga lane junction involving vehicle reg .no KBR 065 B, Isuzu minus c/o KMO Sacco driven by Patrick Macharia Magu, and m/vehicle reg.no KBL 744A Isuzu bus c/o City shuttle driven by Christopher Maina Kirecho and a pedestrian namely Nelly Waithera aged 25 years,” the police report read in part as quoted by a local daily.
Following the nasty incident, Waithera was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to the injuries while receiving treatment.
Her body was transferred to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital mortuary.
