9 Storey Building Collapses In Nairobi

A four-storey building collapsed on Monday in Kamukunji near police lane.

The top floors of the building which are reported to have been recently added to an old construction caved in but no fatalities have been reported.

Police arrived at the scene but a rescue team was not sighted to establish whether there were people, stuck in the debris.

This incident raised the issue of safety precautions and the standard in which structures are being constructed in the country.

In May 2021 scores of people were trapped in rubble after a building under construction collapsed in Nyamira County.

The three-story building that was to host the County Assembly upon completion left 8 people have been injured.

The injured were among other 51 workers who were busy doing their last bits for the day when suddenly the frontage section of the three-storied building came caved in.

“Members of the public have been very helpful in assisting the medical personnel take those who were injured and all those who were working at the site to Nyamira Referral Hospital which is just adjacent to the collapsed building to be treated. We are grateful for their goodwill and efforts to save lives,” Nyamira Governor, Amos Nyaribo said.

County Commissioner Amos Mariba confirmed that there were no deaths after all the debris at the collapsed building were removed.

“All the 51 workers who were at the site were received for emergency care at the Nyamira Referral Hospital and 43 had no injuries, five had minor physical injuries and three had severe injuries which require imaging, chest CT scan and X-ray and are still admitted for observation but are out of danger.
