President Uhuru Kenyatta has today lead a team of leaders in
laying the foundation stone for the construction of a multi-million state-of
the-art sports complex in Kisumu.
According to the President, the project will be ready for
unveiling in April 2021.
He directed Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i who
chairs the National Development Implementation and Communication
Cabinet Committee to ensure infrastructure surrounding the area is fixed
before unveiling of the project.
Specifically, the President directed him to ensure the road
leading to the stadium id tarmacked and the streetlights are fixed.
“Matiang’i wewe ndio chairman, I have seen the road and it is not the road to an international stadium, ensure that it is done before the launch, including the streetlights,” Uhuru said.

Gor Mahia to play AFC
during unveiling of the Sports Complex
The president noted that during the unveiling, the stadium
will play host to the biggest derby in the country pitting Gor Mahia and AFC
leopards.
In a bid to ensure that the match happened as planned, the
President asked Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka to liaise with AFC management and
ensure they are ready when the time comes.
The President noted that Kisumu is a hub for Kenyan
footballers, adding that the facility will help nurture more sporting talent.
“Kama ni mpira wa soka, headquarter ya soka katika taifa
letu la Kenya ni hapa Kisumu. Tunataka kuona vijana wetu wakicheza mpira kwa
runinga wakichezea Liverpool, wengine Manchester,” he said while addressing
Kisumu residents.
